Still Racist

Apparently, when you use it as an adjective, it isn't racist anymore.

Again, I will play language pedant... "niggardly" isn't related to "nigger" etymologically.

HOWEVER... the intent is still intensely racist, not to mention moronic (masquerading as clever), even if by a technicality the word usage isn't. Carry on.

Who is this "Buck Ofama" guy all those young whippersnappers are talking about these days?

That does even make any sense, because "niggardly" means being thrifty and overly careful with your money spending, which is exactly the opposite of what conservatives are claiming about Obama!

"Buck" is pretty racist in itself.

Haha, never fails - some bright eyes always must trot out some dictionarified definition of "niggardly", as if people don't already know about it.

Never. Fails.

Never.

Heh... I was actually just intending to point out that that's what the person who made the sign would undoubtedly say, in an I'm-so-clever-I-want-to-be-punched-in-the-face voice. Not that I agreed that using it was even vaguely okay, whatever its etymology.

(You're so right, though, carmenjonze. What shall we call it? Carmen's Law?)

Also, I missed the link to the word "adjective" in the original post; if I'd seen it, I'd have kept my mouth shut. :)

Nah Anon, no need to call it that. But it really does happen like clockwork. I think it's fascinating, really.

Actually if "niggardly" describes "hurts" it isn't an adjective at all.

It's an adverb.

Boom. Roasted.

While the word by itself is not racist, it's clearly used here because of its similarity to another word thrown around liberally (hurr) by teabaggers to refer to Obama and so the maker of this sign can defend it by pulling out a dictionary. "See? I just think he's overly fiscally conservative! Wait..."

Chris: The sign maker is erroneously using it as an adverb, which makes it an even bigger fail. He thrifty hurts business? Makes no sense. You can change thrifty to thriftily. I don't think there is an adverb form of niggardly.
